Tune in to good music

Music is therapeutic. The notes or swars as we call them in Hindustani classical music permeate one’s being and transcend one to a world far beyond the obvious.

My love for music goes back to my childhood, when we used to listen to music on records that is huge round discs or cassettes. The sheer thrill of purchasing a new record or cassette was beyond compare.

Today, we have come a long way, and can listen to music on our phones. But the effect on our minds is still the same. It has been scientifically proven that music calms the mind and releases stress.

Soothing music relaxes us and can even help people with amnesia, fall asleep. While performing our daily jobs or for commuting from one place to another, music being played in the background can be a worthy companion, taking away from the drudgery of the task or the long hours of commute.

Music gives us the much required pep to complete our workouts and our long walks which may seem almost impossible without it.

A few years ago, I decided to follow my passion and learn classical Hindustani music. Fortunately, I came across a very accomplished and dedicated Guru, and the journey so far has been enriching.

Just yesterday, my Guru and his family members did a live performance online and just listening to them lifted my spirits and made my frame of mind much happier.

The Indian film industry has given us so many beautiful, haunting numbers and such gifted singers, that we will forever remain indebted to them. These invaluable gems are ours forever, and even years later we can go in nostalgia mode and enjoy them.

On the international scene too, we have had such wonderful bands and singers who have performed at concerts, leaving millions of people mesmerized by their fabulous renditions. Such is the power of music.

It transcends barriers of countries, language, religion, and politics and gives the listener only immense pleasure and satisfaction.

Musical instruments too, are a tremendous source of pleasure. While the flute can soothe our nerves, the drums can give us an adrenalin rush like none other.

Music touches the very core of our being and lifts our spirit. So anytime that you’re feeling low, tune in to some good music. It is therapeutic. Ciao!!
