Online

Just the other day I read a forward on whattsap, that asked us to imagine our state if the corona virus pandemic had occurred about eighteen years ago. We would all be stuck with phones that could only exchange text messages and make and receive calls.

Today, our biggest savior is the internet. From keeping in touch with our loved ones, to shopping, to conducting or being part of various classes and workshops everything today is a virtual reality.

In the absence of being able to set out of our homes to buy essentials, everything is available at the click of a button. Just today I downloaded ‘Big Basket’ an app for ordering grocery; toiletries etc. and my requirements are already on their way.

Social distancing is a little more bearable because we can video call people we are close to, and see them if not meet them personally.

An app called ‘house party’ facilitates video calling for a group of people at one go.

The new ‘work from home’ situation is possible only and only because of the internet. Various meetings are being conducted over ‘Zoom’ and other similar apps, facilitating easy exchange of ideas and information.

Emails, of course have been one of the fastest modes of business communication for a while now.

Our entertainment is also taken care of by the internet to a great extent. Netflix, Prime, Amazon have no dearth of content and one is truly spoilt for choice. Movies, Comedy shows, intense dramas are ours for the asking.

Other than watching movies and shows, one can play games online, sing on a karaoke app or join a fitness session on zoom.

Doctors and counselors are even offering online consultations for people who in dire need of them currently.

The human need to stay connected is fulfilled by Facebook and Instagram, where everyone seems to be posting pictures of their culinary pursuits these days.  These apps are also a platform for people to sell their goods and services.

Apps like LinkedIn, keep people connected for work opportunities.

Before the arrival of the pandemic, apps like Uber and Ola facilitated easy movement from one place to another, while Google Maps took you exactly where you wanted to go.

In times of distress such as these, we can even do a virtual ‘darshan’ of our favorite Ganesha as the Siddhi Vinayak temple has gone online but is closed to public.

‘Online’ is the biggest reality and is here to stay. Ciao!!
