Grey Cells

“If the little grey cells are not exercised, they grow the rust. This well-known quote by Agatha Christie, sheds light on how important it is to put our grey cells that is our brain to good use to get ahead in life.
And who would have done it better than Hercule Poirot, the famous fictional character created by Christie? This short statured Belgian detective was unsurpassed in his understanding of the criminal mind, and used his razor sharp intellect to solve the most difficult cases.
Our brain is the epicenter of all our activities. Our actions are governed by what we think. How we put our grey cells to use generally decides the course our life takes.
A person who applies his/her mind can find opportunity even in crises and a person who doesn’t may even lose out on the best opportunities.
As we grow older, it becomes even more imperative to put our grey cells to good use. Alzheimer being on the rise, the adage, ‘use it or lose it’ becomes extremely relevant.
It has generally been observed that people who are more fit physically, tend to have clearer minds and better brain function than their sedentary counterparts.
Hence exercise of the body and the mind is a must.
So how can we exercise our brains ?
There are various games, quizzes and puzzles available that can put our brain to work, as we try to solve them. A simple crossword puzzle or game of Sudoku can help exercise our grey cells. In olden days, chess was one of the most well known ‘brain-related’ games that kept kings and their courtiers busy for days on end.
Travel too, is known to open up the mind. When we visit new places and experience the different cultures, our mind opens up to the fact that people live, think and function differently in different parts of the world. This helps tremendously in broadening our perspective and opens up our mind to new possibilities.
Whether it is doctors, scientists, lawyers, writers or anyone for whom thinking is an integral part of their work, thinking out of the box is almost mandatory. They all have to realize that things cannot be viewed in only one way. There are different facets to the same problem/situation and viewing from every angle can only lead to solutions.
Although ‘brainstorming’ is a popular word in the corporate scenario, some scientists opine that one may actually be better off coming up with solutions oneself than mirroring each other’s thought process.
The left and the right part of the brain are both used by all of us. Those with an analytical bend of mind are said to use the left brain more, while those who are more creative and artistic use the right side more.
Either way, it is in our best interest to optimize the use of our grey cells because every invention, innovation and solution to life’s biggest problems, has originated in the human brain.
Find your ‘eureka’ moment and let your intellect lead you to a better and satisfying life !!
Ciao !!
